Word Count Limits for Essays, SEO and Social Posts

Every platform counts differently. An essay marker counts words, a search result counts characters, and a social post counts whatever fits on the screen. Knowing which number matters for your job is half the work.

Essays and assignments

Count words, and check whether headings, references and captions are included in your limit — rules differ by institution. Aim to land a little under the maximum: cutting the last few words under pressure is where good sentences get damaged. Reading time is a useful second check; a 1,500-word essay is about seven or eight minutes of reading aloud.

SEO titles and descriptions

Search results show roughly 60 characters of a title and about 155 to 160 of a description before cutting off. Write the important words first, and preview how the result would look before publishing, so the cut never lands on the one word that matters.

Social posts

Short posts live or die on the first line. Draft the whole post, count the characters, then tighten the opening until the point is clear without tapping “more”. Hashtags and links eat characters too, so count the finished text, not the draft.

A quick routine

Paste the finished text into a counter, note words, characters with and without spaces, and reading time, then trim to the limit that applies to you. Counting last, after the writing is done, keeps the draft honest and the edit focused.
